Gucci Fights Counterfeits

In August 2009, 3 credit card processors were taken to court by famed fashion house, Gucci for handling business with a website which admittedly sold counterfeit merchandise. The merchandise infringed on the Gucci trademark, obviously hurting sales for genuine products.

Recently, Judge Harold Baer Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York refused to dismiss Gucci's suit. The case included credit card companies Frontline Processing Corp, Woodforest National Bank, Durango Merchant Services LLC, and other unnamed companies fighting the charges. The companies worked with the Laurette Company, owner of

The Laurette website proudly sold counterfeit Gucci merchandise until Gucci caught word of the fakes.
Laurette and the credit card companies were ordered to pay Gucci $5.2 million in damages. Trademark protection is obviously serious business!

B.A.F.F.L.E.D. For Guys

This One's for the Guys!

June is Men's Health Month. Typically, men can be hard to get in a doctor's office and hesitant to keep up regular appointments. Well hopefully, with greater awareness and support, they'll be a little more eager to put health at the top of their priority list.

Men's Health Month is a Congressional health education program to raise awareness about health concerns specific to gentlemen. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, media, and individuals the opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

Health and wellness are not only important to children, women, and the elderly. Men have conditions and health issues all their own, and paying close attention to signs are increasingly important.

The National Men's Health Month Organization has a number of events and promotions lined up to get guys involved and in the know about their health.

So here's to you gentlemen! Keep your health in the forefront of your priorities, and live the long and healthy life you dserve.

The Oil Spill is Thickening More Than Just the Gulf

In recent weeks, the backlash of the Gulf Coast oil spill is increasing. Not only has the off-shore oil source not been plugged, with animals dying and farmers suffering, but the stack of lawsuits is rising. From civil suits to criminal cases, compensation for this unfortunate mishap is being sought from every angle.

In addition to the many cases already filed and pending, the U.S. Department of Justice is set to launch a criminal investigation into the spill. At this point, it's no secret the government is quite upset about the spill itself, but even more so, the lack of haste in cleaning things up. BP recently spent $50 million on a TV ad about the disaster, yet are a bit slow to issue compensation checks to awaiting fishermen.

Even though criminal investigations can often take years to complete, getting the DOJ involved along with independent parties could be sure help speed the process.

Paying Hommage to the LBD

Of course you fashionistas out there know LBD is the every popular, and wardrobe staple, "little black dress". This item is not only versitile, but a necessity in the closet of every woman. The fashion must-have was presented to us by none other than Coco Chanel, and has stood the test of time.

The fashion industry is now paying its respects to the concept. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has teamed up with Mattel to create a series of Barbie dolls doning various LBDs. Dresses were designed by such CFDA notable members as Isaac Mizrahi, Tory Burch, Rachel Roy, Alexis Bittar, and Betsey Johnson. The commemorative dolls are marketed for adult Barbie collectors, to share in the fashion world's respect for the beloved LBD. Although some are upset by the amount of skin some of the dolls are showing, or the cut of their black attire, the thought and passion behind the idea is in the right place.

Will you be adding to your Barbie collection?

B.A.F.F.L.E.D. Law

You Must Use Your Right to Remain Silent!

The SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) recently took a major stance on the historic Miranda Rights. For many decades, suspects being arrested were given "the right to remain silent" and told "anything said can and will be used against you in a court of law". The Miranda Rights, from the Miranda v. Arizona (1966) case, also provide a right to an attorney.

On Tuesday of this week, the high Court ruled criminal suspects must actually speak up and exercise their right to remain silent. Before this ruling, suspects would be waiving their right when answering police questions after the warning. According to the Court, this change in the law is the best preservation of the Constitution.

"There is good reason to require an accused who wants to invoke his or her right to remain silent to do so unambiguously," wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy for the majority. Allowing silence or ambiguous statements to suffice, Kennedy said, would force police to "make difficult decisions about an accused's unclear intent and face the consequence of suppression if they guess wrong."

The 5-4 ruling was very close, and a landmark change for the judiciary. One has to wonder if suspects are keeping up on such important changes in the law.
