When the Store Folds, Relocate to the Internet!

With a struggling economy over the last few years, a number of companies have been forced to file for bankruptcy, or close their doors entirely. As things attempt to take a turn for the better, so have many compromised businesses.

Companies like Linens n' Things, Sharper Image, Circuit City were highly impacted by the slumped housing market, but have recently found new life on the internet. With new ownership, these popular brands now have a second chance in the market.

Remember Wilson's Leather stores in almost every mall? Well now, with the exception of some outlet stores, the bulk of the brand's leather goods can be found at After being forced to sell shares and mall locations, the online sales were the saving grace of the brand.

magazine, the country's most prevalent cooking periodical has even been reignited in the blogosphere. Changes are amid the hardships the magazine industry has seen in the wake of the world wide web and smart phones. Gourmet also has an iPad app (Gourmet Live) set for Fall 2010 release.

Oh what a difference 10 years and some tech-savvy minds can make!

The Coconut Craze

With the heat of summer just setting in, we are all frequently looking for refreshing ways to cool down. One of the most popular cures these days is coconut water. Not only is it a trend among celebrities, but the business is pulling in major numbers; $40-60 million in annual sales. Some brands, like Vita Coco are even so selective as to limit those who invest and endorse their product.

Coconut water has a number of nutritional perks, including its potassium content. To give some background, coconut water is the clear liquid inside young coconuts (fruits of the coconut palm). As the fruit matures, the coconut water gradually is replaced by the coconut meat and air. It is popular in the tropics and contains more electrolytes than most sports drinks. Clearly this is something we could potentially see on the sidelines of sporting events, as the popularity continues the grow.

Other popular brands include ZICO and O.N.E. It may be a trend, but based on the nutritional value and natural sourcing, coconut water is on its way to being "the next big thing".

B.A.F.F.L.E.D. Legal Battles

Lady Gaga Bears a Different Kind of Suit

With a summer tour set to blaze the country, Lady Gaga also has a lawsuit to release. The famed singer, along with Bravado International, Universal Music Group's global merchandising division, and Ate My Heart Inc., the entity holding Lady Gaga's trademark, have filed a claim siting trademark infringement. The claims include a Lanham Act trademark claim (§ 43 (15 U.S.C. §1125). False designations of origin; false description or representation), unfair competition, and right of publicity. They are filing against "John Doe 1-100".

The case requests the U.S. Marshals Service, local and state police, and/or agents of the plaintiffs to seize and impound counterfeit merchandise. Trademark lawyers note many celebs who perform at stadiums and arenas, professional sports teams and their merchandising companies are typical plaintiffs of this kind of case. "John Doe cases" are those allowing these plaintiffs to file against anyone fitting the description of a wrongdoing defendant, without having their exact identity at the time. These types of suits are becoming increasingly popular, as technology advances and counterfeiting runs rampant.

Lady Gaga is clearly not only setting trends in entertainment, but in the courtroom as well. We'll keep an eye on this case.

Good Decision? Bad Decision?

As we all know by now, NBA superstar free agent LeBron James chose to "take his talents to South Beach" and play with the Miami Heat. This decision takes him to a team termed as Dwyane Wade's team, and now also occupied by Chris Bosh.

Will this be good for Miami or a nightmare? Of course, a couple big stars on a team is usually a recipe for a championship dynasty (Chicago Bulls in the 90s, Lakers and Celtics in the 80s), but will these 3 mega stars be able to get it done with the amount of shine they each already have? As much as big stars win championships, they also often do not when sharing and teamwork are clouded by egos.

What do you think? Will the Heat be champs in 2011 or 2012 (with a year to get used to each other)? Or will this be the biggest disaster in NBA free agent history?

In Other Drama -
Obviously the City of Cleveland is extremely upset by this decision and know their economy will see some suffering. See this stern letter from the team's owner!

Also, LeBron James has found a new family member. His alleged father has emerged on the scene and is making as much of a stir as his superstar son! Check the info here.

Weigh in folks, what do you think!?!?!

Completion of the Court Coming Soon

On the heels of esteemed Justice John Paul Stevens' retirement announcement, President Barack Obama announced the selection of Solicitor General, Elena Kagan to take the open seat.

Kagan has been spending the last couple weeks being screened by the U.S. Senate, which must approve the President's appointment. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) has scheduled a committee vote for Tuesday, July 13.

Looks like the SCOTUS will be ready to rule in no time.

King-Sized Shoes to Fill

CNN recently announced the upcoming retirement of the longest running host of a TV show in 1 time slot, Larry King. After recent reports over the last few months of a troubled marriage, King stated his October 2010 retirement was coming in order to let he and his wife make more of their kids' little league games. Larry has interviewed everyone from Presidents to athletes, and entertainment moguls. He has truly left the bar pretty high.

Great news for Larry, and congrats on his long, successful stint as an award-winning television host. But, now CNN has some major shoes to fill. Who do you see filling in the King's spot? Anderson Cooper? Don Lemon? Soledad O'Brien?

This TV show shake-up will absolutely be one to watch!

Speaking of Kings

Basketball fans across the globe are sitting on pins and needles today as the NBA free agent market has opened. Of course, everyone is wondering where LeBron James will land, but there are quite a few others on our watch, too. Dwyane Wade - will he stay in Miami, or go home to Chicago? Chris Bosh has already said he wants out of Toronto. Where will Amar'e Stoudamire play?

Doc Rivers recently decided to stay on as the Celtics head coach, giving the city of Boston a sigh of relief, but will Ray Allen, the sharp-shooting free agent, and Paul Pierce, the marquee player who just opted to become a free agent, stay? The Celtics have a great chance at getting back to the finals with Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett already locked in.

Some say money will do all the talking, as some teams can offer more than others, and "sign-and-trade" deals are most lucrative. Others say the likelihood of winning a championship is the only concern for guys already sitting on millions.

Summer 2010 could change many faces in the NBA. What do you think?
