Fast Food Moving in the Opposite Direction

During the 90s many fast food chains introduced sizes in the likes of "super", "king", and "biggie", to name a few. At this point, we knew about the harms of fat and calories, but might not have been so consumed by it --as we are today.

Fast forward 20 years or so to 2010. The fast food market is looking to shed its harmful reputation and promote healthier lifestyles through portion control. Celebrating it's 25th birthday, Dairy Queen's trademark Blizzard treat is getting a new size. DQ will be introducing a 7oz. Blizzard, known as the "Mini Blizzard", replacing the 12oz. as the smallest serving for the treat.

This trend has also been popular with Burger King, which sold BK Burger Shots in '09, the "short" coffee size at Starbucks, and the "value" size french fry at many fast food locales. As a consolation for the overindulgence introduced to us pounds ago, it appears the message today is "Most things are ok in moderation!"

As many of you know, I am in the midst of a campaign to raise money for the Susan G Komen Foundation. I am hoping to have this as an annual event...we shall see.

Well as part of my final fundraiser event, I want to put together an inspirational 'movie'.

I am looking for survivors & warriors! who have battled breast cancer... I want to take all the people and chop it up into a "movie" that puts a face to the cause...a familiar face.

If you are a survivor, or a warrior I would love to hear from you. I am looking for a video (1-2 minutes) that simply states the following:

1. Name
2. Age
3. Whether you are a survivor or a warrior
4. A simple message about you being one of the above.
(i.e. I am a survivor because.... or I am a warrior because...)

Please note that by submitting your video or picture and statement, you will be granting permission for me to use your video and/or picture and statements in a media presentation to promote awareness about breast cancer

“The Happy Land of McDonald's May Be Happy No More….”

Just because times change, does that mean you should also?

In most situations I would say yes, but given the case of McDonald's I say no! There have been new stories informing the consumers of the idea to take McDonald's from the fun playhouse most 80’s babies grew up on, to a more upscale coffee house. McDonald's has decided, since they now sell $4 burgers and lattes, they no longer want to be seen as just a fast food restaurant; they want to be seen as competition for places such as Starbucks and Potbelly.

McDonald’s was built on the idea of Ronald McDonald, and a place for kids to come with parents to get a fun meal, a toy and to play in the balls. Now they want to take out the play area and make it a place for teenagers and adults, to come have coffee and study. McDonald’s get a grip! How much research have you really done on this? Have you studied the demographics of the areas in which most McDonald's are held? Don’t get me wrong; I do believe that some locations would benefit from a change such as this, but definitely not all of them. The McDonald’s in Oak Brook, IL (the city of the corporate headquarters) would be a great location to have a coffee house-style location, but the many McDonald's on the West Side of Chicago, shouldn’t even qualify for this idea. These locations are places where parents bring their kids for a fun play day alone or with friends. Can you really imagine going to study in one of these locations? I don’t think so!

McDonald's wants to rebrand itself, but is leaving the happy meal land really the rebranding solution that works well for the total organization? Well apparently I’m not the only person who has some doubt. Many McDonald's are franchise locations, and many of them don’t agree this new change will actually result in a positive return on investment-- which means that McDonald's as a corporation will have to provide most of the funding.

Are you ready to see happy meal land be taken over by a coffeehouse? If they make this change, honestly, will you ever see it that way? McDonald's will always be to me, the place where I had a birthday party at as a child, a place to get a happy meal, and a place to go play. It’s a kid place, not an adult place.

McDonald’s, proceed with caution, rebranding is not always the best idea.

Recovery Returns

Soon after the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate chambers passed an $18 billion bill to recover unemployment benefits across the nation, President Obama signed the bill into law. This comes after millions of Americans went without benefits, because of a filibuster on the Senate floor about a month ago.

The legislation restores Medicare payments to doctors who were in jeopardy of being compensated, and allows people to reapply for long-term unemployment benefits, receiving missed checks retroactively. This temporary fix is hoped to be a saving grace to those on the hustle each day to recoup the lifestyles they found compromised by our recent economic conditions.

Obama stated “Millions of Americans who lost their jobs in this economic crisis depend on unemployment and health insurance benefits to get by as they look for work and get themselves back on their feet.

Hopefully this spark can ignite the economy in the right direction, creating and reviving jobs on all fronts. The bill increases the nation’s deficit, but is key as a short-term fix.

B.A.F.F.L.E.D. Green

Celebrate Earth Day in Chicago!



Chicago’s Largest Community-based Earth Day event features a food-focused look at the “Recipe for a Healthy Planet”. Fresh, cold, hot, but always healthy – food is the focus of the third annual North Lake Shore Earth Day celebration on Saturday April, 17th, Chicago’s largest multi-community Earth Day event.


North Side organizations and activists from Andersonville, Edgewater, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, Rogers Park and Uptown, with support from Loyola University Chicago, will gather to inform and advocate for a “Recipe for a Healthy Planet”, encouraging Chicagoans to champion a quality food future.


This free, all-day, family event begins at 9 a.m and ends at 4:30 p.m., indoors, at Loyola’s Lakeshore campus, inside the Quinlan Life Sciences Building at 1050 W. Sheridan Road.
Workshops, panels, art projects, cooking demonstrations, environmental group tabling and films about food will provide participants with the knowledge and techniques to create a healthier food system and greener living practices in their shared communities.

Join in the various workshops, presentations and panels and hear about neighborhood food policy, making stock from vegetable scraps, making your own baby food, and learning the basics of edible landscaping. The exciting film program includes the film “Fresh”, an inspirational documentary that highlights farmers and communities that have created an alternative to the industrialized food system; and “A Quiet Revolution”, narrated by Meryl Streep, showing case studies on how even one person’s action can cause environmental solutions. At your leisure, you can also converse and get informed from the participants of the 50-table strong Green Fair.

Children will have fun as they learn about seed planting, nature’s creatures, eating organic, yoga, collaging and composting and a full day of additional activities at State Representative Harry Osterman’s Kid’s Corner. Mike Nowak, Master Gardener, Humorist and WCPT Radio personality is the morning’s keynote speaker, highlighting the local initiatives Chicagoans can foster to encourage more healthy food in their own communities.

Elected officials participating in this event are Chicago Aldermen Patrick O’Connor (40th), Helen Shiller (46th), Eugene Schulter (47th), Mary Ann Smith (48th) and Joe Moore (49th), Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Congressman Mike Quigley, Illinois State Senator Heather Steans; and State Representatives Greg Harris and Harry Osterman.

A light breakfast and coffee will be provided. Lunch will be sold on site by local vendors. The event is easily accessible by public transportation via the CTA Red Line and the #147 bus. Drivers may park for free at the campus main parking garage. Walking and biking are encouraged, and all cyclists are invited to join in our community bike ride.

In addition to the Saturday main event, a special musical evening will be held the night of Friday, April 16th, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the newly renovated Stella Maris Chapel of Loyola University. The local musicians showcased will be recording for the Earth Day event on Saturday. Northside community leaders will also be honored with certificates of appreciation and resource kits to help them green their blocks and neighborhoods.

Back in the President's Court

After the announcement late last week of esteemed Justice John Paul Stevens retiring from the U.S. Supreme Court, President Obama finds himself with the task of contemplating his second choice for the high Court.

Justice Stevens turns 90 later this month and has served on the Supreme Court for 35 years. In his retirement message to the President, he respectfully noted:
"My dear Mr. President," Stevens wrote. "Having concluded that it would be in the best interests of the court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the court's next term, I shall retire from regular active service as an associate justice ... effective the next day after the court rises for the summer recess this year."

Stevens has been known as the unexpected radical on the court, swaying opinions toward more liberal rulings. His colleagues have revered him as a leader and mentor, and will find a great void on the bench without him.

So with this new vacancy in the balance, what will President Obama do? Unlike his appointment of Justice Sotamayor, no single "hot possible replacement" appears to be on deck. Will there be pressure to appoint a "Stevens clone"? A minority? Right now, there are about 10 on the list of possibles and the White House seems to be in no rush to make a hasty selection.

Obviously this choice will be pivotal in an election year. Let's watch and see what happens.

Beauty is Pain

It is no secret. Millions of women wear shoes to optimize their outfit, but give their feet the grief of a lifetime. A recent article on CNN dove into the phenomenon of wearing painful (but cute!) shoes yes, despite the well-known pain.

Experts have connected the heel height to the level of economic plight facing society. Heels have seen higher levels during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the oil crisis of the 70s, and the late Alexander McQueen created a 12 inch shoe not too long before his 2010 death.

Despite the advise of podiatrists to wear “sensible shoes”, women stand strong against this direction. This defiance, however, does keep the foot docs in business. Choosing to look good over feeling good has brought about the need for sly survival tricks, including shifting weight when standing, and slipping off the super shoes when sitting. InStyle Magazine has also provided us with a list of 12 Heels that Don’t Hurt to enable the slaves to fashionable shoes.

Ladies, do you defy pain and strut in your stilettos anyway? What’s the breaking point in your heel height? Would anything make you revert to flats completely?

North and South Meet in the Middle

Cold weather apparel maker, The North Face has reached a settlement in their December 2009 suit against parody apparel maker, The South Butt. North Face filed the suit claiming trademark infringement and dilution of their brand, resulting from the rising popularity and profits of South Butt.

The South Butt was founded by a 19-year old University of Missouri freshman, as a joke which has a bigger punch line than imagined. He began selling the clothes through a Columbia, MO pharmacy and online, spreading the comedic attire like fire. To no surprise, North Face was outraged by the clothing line, and sent their unwanted counterpart a cease & desist letter. It was ignored.

Trademark infringement is characterized largely by confusion in the market. Where consumers may be led to believe 2 entities are related, infringement likely looms. The North Face rightfully argued their reputation was being tarnished. The South Butt was not only making fun of their brand, but profiting from it as well. Although parodies are protected under trademark law, parodies making enough to cover college tuition are not!

Somehow the 2 poles have found a way to settle their bout, with obvious reluctance on both ends. Did the young entrepreneur take his joke too far? Did the well established corporation blow this one out of proportion? Aside from the legal implications, what do you make of the case?

Maybe this calls for a true collaborative effort?

Keep Music In Our Schools

Although March was Music in Our Schools Month, the push to keep music and other performing arts alive should never be restricted to just 31 days. Music programs give students an outlet to hone their creative skills and nurture natural talents. Music not only provides education and discipline to students, which is a must these days, but is also enjoyable to those performing and listening.

Across the country, a number of organizations are in tune to keep music in our schools. Although the nation and many states are seeing financial strains on all sides, education should be one of the last cuts made and the first to receive funds. Organizations like VH1 - Save the Music, Music in Schools Today and MENC: The National Association for Music Education provide ways to donate time and money to make music and other performing arts mainstays in our schools.

ny of us have a slew of clothes and shoes, and often run out of space for them. Even more of us (hopefully) like to share our gifts and blessings with others. Certainly there's a number of us who like styling others, helping them bring out the best in themselves, and their closets. Well, Chicago has the perfect place!

Bottomless Closet
is the first workforce agency of its kind in the United States. In their own words, the founders of this nonprofit agency sought "to elevate the employment potential and marketability of women welfare recipients who want to work. It will provide clothing, at no charge, to women on assistance who don't have suitable clothing to wear to a job interview".

Volunteers can share their time by signing up for personal consultations to share their style savvy knowledge, or donate gently used professional attire to those preparing for the workforce.
This organization truly has it all! Share your fashion, share your passion, make a difference.
