Nubian Skin:  The Nude Must Have for Magical Melanin!

How frustrating it can be to find the cutest outfit ever, but not be able to find the nude undies you need to make it pop.  Oh, but how magnificent it is to find out there's a line out there, for women with popping melanin, to rock when they need neutral tones under their outfits!

This is Nubian Skin.  Inspired by women like Eunice W. Johnson and Iman, London designer Ade Hassan has given us a "different kind of nude".  Her brand takes undergarments to a new level, making all women feel included--and even more beautiful--in their skintone.

We got to ask her a few questions about her brand, what got her to where she is, and what's next. We always love these Spotlights.  Check out her answers...and order away for the holidays!!


1.     How did you get started in fashion?  What sparked your interest?
My background wasn’t in fashion, but I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and I’ve always wanted my business to be fashion related. When I took a 15 month break from work several years ago before starting Nubian Skin, I took some sewing and pattern cutting classes in Paris.  Nubian Skin as a concept was really born out of a need I had myself.

2.     What is it like being part of the fashion industry across several international borders?  How are the nations similar?  How are they different?
 Our customers really do vary! Our US customers aren’t afraid to tell us what they would like to see, our UK customers are hosiery fans and our customers in Nigeria are really into our lace collection!

3.     What do you just adore about the fashion and beauty industry?
I’ve been fortunate enough to have met some incredibly talented lingerie and sleepwear designers since I’ve been in the industry, and I really love some of the amazing things that they’ve created. 

4.     Since we're a fashion law blog, we have to ask--what are some legal issues or challenges you have faced, if any?
It’s definitely key to protect your brand, so make sure to trademark your name and slogans, and if you have something that is a new technical innovation look into patents.

5.     How do you work to protect your brand?  What sets your brand apart from the others to help make protecting it easier?
It’s impossible to protect everything – unfortunately you can’t patent a color! Our brand has a very specific voice and women of color are attracted to our brand because we’re offering a product specifically for them, which is quite an empowering thing. Also, we were the first to the market, so we have a lot of loyal customers and followers who love the brand! I think one of the things that makes our customers so loyal is that they know it’s from the heart.  It’s someone who had been through the experience and literally saw there was nothing out there, and so decided to cater to women of color.  We weren’t just jumping on a band wagon.

                           

6.     What would you consider your stamp on the lingerie industry?  What makes Nubian Skin extra special?
You can definitely see the industry is now looking at “nude” in a more inclusive way, and we’re incredibly proud to have been the catalyst for change.

7.     What do you feel the industry needs most?  What do you plan to do (continue doing) to help achieve those needs?
I believe the industry will start to really look into what the consumer wants and needs as opposed to expecting consumers to simply accept what is available.  Particularly as smaller brands start companies that address a specific need.  That’s what we did, and at the moment we are focusing on developing our fuller cup range, so we will be able to include a lot more women in our offering!

8.     What's next for the Nubian Skin Brand?
At the moment, our main focus is working on our fuller cup range and launching that! After that we have a few exciting ideas up our sleeves – so watch this space!

9.     What are your favorite types of garments to design? 
I love coming up with new concepts and collections.  The idea behind the Moroccan Nights collection was so amazing.

10.    Is Nubian Skin exactly what you envisioned it would be?  What part isn't what you thought it would be?
I created the brand based on my vision, so to an extent it is how I envisioned it! The only part I didn’t imagine was how much hard work it would require and how much love we would receive!

11.    What should people know about Nubian Skin that isn't obvious?
We are a tiny team!

 
12.  What has been your proudest moment for Nubian Skin so far?
There have been lots! But some of my proudest moments have included supplying the lingerie for Beyonce’s Formation Tour and supplying the undergarments for lots of West End and Broadway shows, that’s incredibly exciting.

13.  What would you tell the 13 year-old girl who asks you for advice?

Work hard and be determined.

Shut Up Silence on Domestic Violence Awareness--

You've met the ladies of Noisemakers, but don't forget to continue spreading the word of support for this awesome project.  We are so excited to promote Shut Up Silence, an awesome film on the fall-out from abusive relationships on college campuses.  


The fabulous female filmmaking trio is making waves with this project, and have launched an Indiegogo campaign to continue driving support.  Over the next three months, the women have set a fundraising goal of $250,000.

“This is my story. I’ve lived this, and now I can’t hold it in any longer,” said Natasha Parker, award-winning writer/director and one of the founding partners of Noisemakers Entertainment

The film, titled “Shut up Silence,” takes place in a university setting where the lead character finds herself in a relationship with her college sweetheart that seems impossible to walk away from. A rollercoaster of events, including ignored abuse, lead to a critical choice she must make between freedom and love. 

“There are so many young women and girls who are in abusive relationships and either don’t realize it or need help confronting their circumstances,” said Parker. “This film will help them see that’s it time to get out or their life may depend on it.” 

“Making a quality film takes money, and we thought Indiegogo was a great route to go,” said Adrienne Swan, fellow Noisemaker and accountant. “It’s my job to make sure the numbers are right and that we approach every project in a manner that is fiscally sound.” 

Noisemaker partner LaTrice Edwards couldn’t agree more. Edwards, a celebrity makeup artist and philanthropist looks forward to the film “Shut Up Silence” becoming a reality and intends to add her creative touch. “Not only do we feel compelled to help Natasha tell her story, but we want to save lives too,” said Edwards. 
Pending the success of the Indiegogo campaign, filming is set to begin in the spring of 2017. 


“We are looking for donations of all sizes,” added Parker. “Every contribution gets us one step closer to shutting up the silence about domestic violence.”

About Noisemakers Entertainment 
Noisemakers Entertainment’s purpose is to create and develop unique diverse stories through film that entertain, empower and stir the human spirit while providing creative outlets and platforms for industry talent. 


Meet the Noisemakers 
Natasha Parker is a writer, director and producer raised on the West Side of Chicago. Parker graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.A. in Speech Communications, with a minor in African-American Studies. Working various corporate jobs after graduation, her true passion guided her towards filmmaking. With continued studies at the Independent Screenwriters Group, she began a career in the entertainment industry in 2004. 

In 2009, Natasha created Noisemakers Entertainment and co-founded the company. Writing, directing and producing two shorts in three days, “The Package” and “The Lost One” have garnered the attention of the Library of Congress, competed in the Martha’s Vineyard HBO short film series, Urban World, Pan African Film Festival, Black Harvest and a nominee for an African Movie Academy Award in Nigeria. 
Balancing the dual hats as an independent filmmaker and studio craftsman, Natasha learned the skilled professions of wardrobe, props and coordinating for various departments becoming a proud member of IATSE 476. Reaching further, Natasha strived for and earned the title of Location Manager joining the esteemed Director’s Guild of America. Her credits range from films such as Transformers 3, Empire, Man of Steel, Chiraq, as well as a multitude of television shows and commercials. 

Gary, IN native, LaTrice L. Edwards’ industry experience started in 2001 as a make-up artist. The I.A.T.S.E. Union members’ (Studio Mechanics Local 476) work has been seen on several A-list Films, TV shows and celebrities. However, her tugging interest in film producing never allowed her to let go of her business roots in Corporate America. Edwards’ philanthropic efforts as founder of Triumphant Transitions, Inc. (www.triumphanttransitions.org) have been recognized by several media outlets, including CBS 2 News Chicago. 
The recipient of a B.S. Degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing from Ball State University, Edwards is also the creator/designer of Power Style Tees (a charitable empowerment t-shirt initiative of Triumphant Transitions, Inc.) The Ball State University Alumni Association honored Edwards in 2007 with the Alumni Award of Achievement, in recognition of her professional accomplishments and voluntary service. Edwards is a 2011 life membership inductee of the Northwest Indiana Society of Innovators. She is now combining her passion, corporate and film experience for the greater good of creative arts with Noisemakers Entertainment, LLC. 

Chicago native, Adrienne Swan, is a consummate professional with 20 years of experience in Production Accounting. She is a member of the IATSE Union for Accountants both in Los Angeles and New York. Her experience is sought after by the industry on both the major studios and independent film level with over 30 credits in her filmography. Adrienne’s degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, coupled with corporate experience, has more than prepared her for a successful career in the entertainment industry. In recent years, Adrienne has added Line Producer and Production Management to her industry experience. In addition to her commitment to social advocacy and youth empowerment, Adrienne is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

NBA Takes Style to the Next Level--

Coming to a Barneys New York near you, Greg Chait of The Elder Statesman will be launching an NBA-themed luxury line, just in time for the weather to chill.  On November 3rd, luxury enthusiasts will be able to rock their favorite NBA team--wrapped in cashmere.  

In addition to Barneys, the collection will also be available online, and at select retail outlets.  Both men and women's options will be introduced for prices ranging from $420-$1560.  After the initial launch, The Elder Statesman will debut new items for Christmas (when players usually wear commemorative jerseys), the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, and at the start of the playoffs.  

The league is pretty excited about this partnership, as they continue to take the league to the next level.  “We are excited to be working with a brand like the Elder Statesman to offer such unique, premium products to our fans,” says Lisa Piken Koper, the NBA’s vice president of global partnerships. “The NBA and fashion naturally cross over, and this line is a great expression of that overlap.”

Recent trends have included players becoming more conscious of their fashion choices.  Players like Jimmy Butler and Russell Westbrook have partnerships with fashion brands (Bonobos and Byredo respectively), and many other players work with designers regularly to help with their game arrival or sideline looks.  All-Star Weekend has actually become quite the fashion show, itself.  

Similar to the heavy hand fashion played in the Summer 2016 Olympics, sports is definitely taking an influential role in fashion.

Top 8 Things to Know About Breast Cancer Awareness--

What a great reason to bring back our old feature, Tuesday Tops!  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Despite the month having 31 days, this is something we must be aware of all year long.  

As we've shared before, there are some essentials about the condition, and what we can all do to fight it.  

1.  Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It affects millions of women, and thankfully gets the needed attention to fight its surge.  

2.  Regular doctor visits and mammograms for women over the age of 40 are critical in breast health.  If you are at risk for breast cancer, because of a history of the condition in your family, you should have mammograms sooner for early detection.  Many insurance companies have improved coverage for breast health, and social service centers are helping out as well.  Check our local area for more.  

3. Real Talk With Felicia is a major player in the fight against breast cancer through their fundraising arm, Purposed for Pink.  Purposed For Pink raises money for breast cancer research in conjunction with the Susan G. Komen efforts for combating this crippling condition. 

4. We are continuing our annual fashion for a cause campaign this month, raising awareness through our style on Wednesdays.  Share your pics on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook with the hashtags!

5. Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.  We must get these numbers lower.  


6. Breast cancer impacts us all. Approximately 1,700 men ill also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year.  This isn't just about the ladies, gents.  

7. You can help fight this disease and get closer to a cure.  Make a donation, or consult your local breast cancer awareness foundation to volunteer some time.

Powerful Facts About Domestic Violence Awareness--

After watching Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge, and Michel'le on Lifetime this past Saturday, we were reminded we still have a long way to go on the road to combat domestic violence.  Seeing the No More commercials, especially with a coed cast was powerful.  We all have to have a hand in not only the awareness, but action, too.   

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. It's important we share key facts about domestic violence, so we all can work on a cure.  You've seen some of these facts before, but they are no less important!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) grew out of the "Day of Unity" in October 1981, by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The vision was to connect advocates across the country, working to end violence against women and their children. Like many other causes, such a short time to promote awareness was not long enough, so all of October is now dedicated to this cause.

Domestic violence is an unfortunate circumstance in far too many homes across America.  In order to fight this epidemic we must educate and spread the word.  As always, we'd like to share the facts below.  

Here's what you should know:

1. Domestic violence sees no race, color, ethnic background, or economic status.  It affects people in all walks of life.  Men are also impacted, not just women and children.  It's also more than just physical abuse.  Emotional abuse counts, too.  

2. Domestic violence is cyclical.  Although many who are abused feel pain and resent their abusers, they often go on to repeat the behavior.  For children, it is often the only way they know.  Without education and therapy to deal with the circumstance, the problem can perpetuate.

3. Due to lack of resources, the number of survivors to whom local Coalitions Against Domestic Violence (CADV) have provided shelter has decreased by 20%, while the number of victims turned away has increased by 16% over the last four years.  In the last year alone CADVs saw a drastic 12% drop in the number survivors who obtained safe, emergency shelter. Despite this fact, survivors and their children received over 522,000 hours of service last year alone. 

4. Help is available at all times.  Victims, and even offenders who know they need help, may not know where to turn.  To get things rolling, anyone can call the National Domestic Violence Helpline at 1-800-799-SAFE.  

5.  Safety Plans help.  The hotline is an amazing tool, but creating safety plans takes things a step further.  The plan will help victims route their escape from pain and chart their journey to a better life.  Plans can include starting a separate savings account, thinking of exit routes from the home, avoiding arguments where weapons are readily accessible, i.e. the kitchen, and having someone available at all times to pick you up or be home when you need them.  For more ideas, click here.

6. There's always a hope for change.  No matter how tough the situation appears; for you or someone you're witnessing, various outlets are available to stop the cycle and give families strength. 

We all should become as educated as possible on the signs and resolutions for domestic violence.  If you are experiencing or sensing signs---say or do something.  Don't wait. With so many tough circumstances to face these days, violence among loved ones is never one we need.
