Summertime Chi - The Chicago River

Chicago is know for its beautiful lakefront, but the Chicago River is a pride and joy as well.  During warm months, the river lights up with boats, architectural tours, and dining.

Enjoy the breeze and feast your eyes on these tasty spots along the Chicago River.

Bridge Bar Chicago
This is a great spot for an afternoon lunch or evening drink.  It's right on the River at Clark St. You'll enjoy great food and an amazing view.

Great spot for meeting up with coworkers after hours, or even a private event.  There's ample space to be comfortable and watch the boats go by.  They also have an Old Town location for when the temperatures start to drop.

Smith & Wollensky
Perfect for the swanky foodie.  You get a nice view by the river--even better at night, plus some of the best, award-winning food in the City.  This is a must-go for sure!

Chicago Cut
Some of the best chicken parmigiana--no question, but of course their steak is tasty, too.  Dipped off a bit between LaSalle St. and Wells, this spot has renowned dinner, drinks, and lunch!

This Japanese-inspired spot is a bit north on the River, with a relaxing feel for dinner or drinks.  The cabanas outside are nice for enjoying a Chicago night.  Switch it up and check them out!

Chicago River Cafe
It's a casual spot, ideal for after work.  They have daily specials and the manager is so friendly! Drop by for a bit and enjoy.

'Hangover' Alan's Lewis Vuitton is OK: Luxury Vuitton Brand loses suit against Warner Bros.

By Contributing Editor, Elspeth Crawford

"It adds to the image of Alan as a socially inept and comically misinformed character, " said the district court judge in the case dismissal brought by the luxury label last week. Zach Galifianakis, purporting a hysterical persona, donned a knock-off version of the classic 'LV' monogrammed print, warning another character to be "careful... that's a 'Lewis' Vuitton" in Warner Brothers 'The Hangover: Part II'.

According to Judge Andrew Carter, the "remark also comes across as funny because he mispronounces the French 'Louis' like the English 'Lewis,' and ironic because he cannot correctly pronounce the brand name of one of his expensive possessions." Additionally, Galifianakis’ character also pronounces Thailand as “Thigh-land”.

The bag in question was actually manufactured by the Chinese American company Diophy, which distributes counterfeit designer goods. However, the judge maintained that the audience would hardly notice whether the bag was genuine or not, as it was not a focal point in the picture screened for less than 30 seconds.

The crude sequel went on to become the highest-grossing rated 'R' comedy ever, netting $580 million at the time the complaint was brought.

Now, the shocking part of this decision is not the fact that the judge felt it was fine for Warner Brothers to allude to the designer incorrectly; mockery and satire are typically always excluded from copyright infringement and are protected by fair use. The judge ruled that Warner Brothers’ use of the recognizable trademark monogram was protected under First Amendment, since it was used in fun.

Rather, the case's bewildering aspect is that Warner Brothers was let off the hook for blatantly purchasing, using, and displaying an admittedly fake designer handbag. Considering the federal movement against (or so everyone thought) counterfeit knock-off goods, it seems odd that Warner Brothers was not punished for using a fake, and subsequently making it very public that they did so. This case definitely sends a confusing message about activity that is considered criminal.

It's likely that the French fashion house, which is owned by the 4th richest family in the world according to Forbes, did not actually suffer any harm or damages from the satirical 'misrepresentation' - but who can blame them for wanting to collect royalties on $580 million.

**Special thanks to Elspeth at AttorneyFee for this piece!

Top 5 Benefits of Dark Chocolate!

Yep, chocolate is a favorite of so many, and we are giving you reasons to validate eating it.  We've talked about the things you may not know about chocolate, and now we've got the benefits of this dark treat.

1. Dark chocolate reduces the risk of cancer
Dark chocolate is stocked with flavonoids, a phytonutrient compound found naturally in apples, grapes, tea, cocoa, and cherries.  It is responsible for the antioxidant effect provided by red wine and green tea.  Flavonoids are loaded with antioxidants.  Studies have shown people who eat them develop less cancers than those who do not.

2.  Dark chocolate raises the good cholesterol (HDL).
The cocoa butter in chocolate is rich in oleic acid, the same monounsaturated fat in olive oil.  This ingredient helps increase your good cholesterol and works to decrease incidences of strokes.

3.  Dark chocolate helps prevent heart disease.
Eating dark chocolate has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease by 30% for people getting a weekly indulgence. It's good for the blood and keeps the heart pumping properly.

4.  Dark chocolate improves vision.
The improved blood flow from eating dark chocolate also helps make the vision clearer and stronger.  The flavonoids strike again, benefitting connoisseurs of the dark delight.

5.  Dark chocolate makes you happy.
A no-brainer, of course.  Dark chocolate is packed with healthy, natural ingredients, but it also tastes great and improves the mood.  It's great for dessert, a snack, and really and reason you choose.

For more of this sweet treat, check out Chicago Chocolate Tours--any time of the year!

5 Legal Matters for the Summer--

It may not be officially Summer according to the calendar just yet, but the temperatures tell us otherwise.  Today we're giving you 5 quick legal matters to keep in mind as the days heat up.

1.  Keep the kiddies busy.
This may be a task since school is out, but it's worth it.  Make sure your children have something to do. Busy children are happy children-- and those children stay out of trouble.  Between swimming lessons (everyone should know how) festivals, and camps, there's plenty to keep your young ones occupied.  Remember, parents of delinquent minors get fined and punished, too.

2.  Enjoy Summer drinks...with caution.
Sounds like a no-brainer, but we wouldn't have DUI laws if it was.  Summer is a great time to have drinks to cool you off, but it's also high time for drinking and driving.  Just don't do it.  There'll be implications for your license (obviously), other criminal possible actions, your job and personal life.  Have a designated driver, catch a cab, or take public transportation.  It will save you stress later.

3.  Make sure your business is in order.
Summer is a great time to nurture ideas and create businesses.  It may also be the time your licenses or other credentials expire.  Check your books and make sure everything is up to date. Are you paying your taxes?  Did you renew your insurance?  Double check everything to be certain you can make the most of added Summer revenues.

4.  Study your Electeds.
It is an election year, so it's important to know about the candidates you will get to select this coming November.  You may always vote based on political party, and even if you do, know the candidates you may be making your elected officials are on the up-and-up.  They will be holding debates and Town Halls.  You should attend.  You want your voice to be heard at the polls in November and doing your homework over the Summer will help.

5.  Watch what you buy.
We strongly concur with the sentiments "Fakes Are Never In Fashion".  You might want to as well.  There have been a number of cases lately regarding counterfeit clothing and garments.  Don't be a part of this criminal market.  Buy from trustworthy stores and websites.  No need to endorse a fake when there's so much style at every price point.

We hope these tips were helpful.  Happy Summer!

Top 5 Things My Daddy Taught Me~

Just as our Tuesday Tops premiered on Sunday for the Mothers, we are doing the same thing for the Dads.  Often, fathers get the short-end of the stick in comparison to moms, but there are plenty of wonderful dads out there who deserve recognition and appreciation beyond belief.  As a Daddy's Girl I can attest to the importance of having a great father in my life.

He's taught me more than this blog could ever hold, but I'm sharing a small sample today.

1.  Be a good decision-maker.
Many times, we think things are just happening to us, or the world is mad at us for some reason.  Daddy helped me realize, nothing is by accident.  The decisions you make in life, big and small, set the stage for what will and won't happen ahead.  When things are going well, you can look back and see the choices you made as the reason--same as when things are not going so well.

In Daddy's words, "We control our own destiny."  It's true there are many things beyond our control, but making the best decisions on the ones in your hands is essential.

2. The key to success is doing the things no one likes to do.
You don't want to hear this one as a kid, but as an adult, you realize how true it is.  Often, the difference between happy and successful people, and the unhappy strugglers is the ability to just suck it up and do what you have to for the end goal.  We all come across things we don't want to do--they take too long, they're too hard, no one else is doing them, you just don't feel like it--the list is endless.  This is the case for everyone, but the decision to do what you must no matter what is usually the difference-maker.  I take this lesson with me everyday.

3. Be good, be helpful.
Daddy still tells me "if you can help someone, help them".  He's so right, and why not?  A lot of times, it's easy to consider what's in it for you, but maybe the chance to help someone else is what's in it for you.  Do you really need more?  After all, what goes around, comes around, so there's really no need to worry.

*This is actually a bonus lesson:  Don't worry.  If you've planned and are doing what you are supposed to do, you don't have time to worry.

4. Do not let your fears dictate your actions.
I keep this in mind so often, especially when a major decision needs to be made.  My Daddy has taught me about fear, and helped me realize, there's no need for it.  We all get scared from time to time, or frightened at the encounter of a surprise, but we cannot let fear of anything we face dictate what's necessary for us to do or achieve.  Fears are just roadblocks, and letting them stand in the way of our actions does nothing more than just hold us back.  When I think I may be facing fear, I remember it's just an illusion.

5. Keep your word.
The importance of this one is immeasurable.  Your word is sometimes all you have as an adult, with the countless circumstances you'll encounter.  Whether it's at work or in a personal relationship, being trustworthy is what will precede and succeed everything you do.  It is easy to make promises, but it takes real effort to keep them.  I can't think of one thing my Daddy has told me which hasn't held up, and I want to be sure people can say the same about me.  To some, this seems to be quite difficult, which is hard to understand, but there is nothing like the truth.  We should all embrace it.

I hope you all enjoyed these lessons as much as I did sharing them.  I am blessed to know I have many more lessons ahead for Daddy to share with me, and am even more thankful to have the ones I do.

Daddy and I the day I was sworn in as an attorney.

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there.  We need you.

Artistic Visions Become Reality~

When searching for a way to put some creative thoughts into graphic reality, we found Rachel Gadson, owner of I.LA.  She has an artistic eye like no other, and a portfolio worth bragging about.  Here's a little more about why we adore her work.

A graduate of Florida A&M University with a passion for art, Chicago native Rachel Gadson is enthused to make a name for herself as a graphic designer. Stemming from adolescence, art has always been an area where I feel most comfortable. It wasn't until post grad life that I realized the "dream job" at an Advertising agency that I just new I'd land (but didn't) became an unexpected reality; and I quickly had to find a means to support myself.

Six months after graduating I was a young entrepreneur starting my own freelance company, I.LA. Covering all aspects, from branding to marketing and even some web design, clientele began to steadily grow. While not being the "ideal" job to have, it's very rewarding to provide others a service from the comfort of your home, and produce the same quality work that may be found at a prestige design firm.

Some examples of my work can be found on my site at Additionally, holding the Creative Director position for Just A Reminder (JAR), a family operated business focused on empowering and inspiring diverse groups of people through a plethora of unique T-shirt designs, as well as other platforms is another project I'm eager to see blossom. More information regarding JAR can be found on our site at

What's next for me? Diligently working to leave an unforgettable mark, consistently living up to the expectations of those who've paved the way and providing inspiration for those to come.

Rachel's talent is amazing.  We just wanted you to know.

Top 4 Answers to "Why Fashion Law?"

Fashion law is alive and well.  It is a growing niche making waves on the internet, in social media, and in the field of law, period.  This stylish segment of practice has found more recognition through blogs, seminars, and even its own department at Fordham Law.  Because of some of our faves--listed below, we can give you these answers to "Why Fashion Law?"

1. It's serious.
Some people take fashion law to be something superficial, made-up, or even just in the imagination of a law student.  Incorrect.  Fashion law is built upon major issues in law, including business, contracts, copyright, trademarks, labor, trade, and more.  With the fashion industry growing faster every fiscal year, fashion law has no choice but to exist.  The demand is serious and so is the niche.

2.  Fashion law goes against the grain.
Certainly when you think of lawyers you think of people going to court, writing briefs and motions, and reading through cases hour after billable hour.  Some of these things exist for fashion lawyers, too.  But, there's more.  This niche allows those of us with a creative fire to pair our passion with our professional dreams.  Thinking outside the box is the "R" in IRAC.  Fashion shows may be a regular spot on the calendar, and the clientele is often another creative soul who you can swap ideas with.

The characteristic view of the legal profession is now donned in high heels, swanky suits, and fedoras.  Here, anything goes, and you can see the J.D. on the wall if you dare contest it.

3.  Fashion law is a dream-come-true.
So many of us fashion lawyers dreamed of this day while reading IP cases in law school.  We were thinking of a way to pair our love for law and passion for fashion.  We loved copyrights and trademarks; found interest in business law and contracts, and even took research as a chance to build credibility in the discipline.

Blogs were started, side projects were done, and as many of us connected through social media, we found comfort in knowing...there were others.  The lights were on the catwalk, and we all strolled out together.  Following the lead of in-house fashion counsel Barbara Kolsun and trailblazer Susan Scafidi of Counterfeit Chic and federal fashion law campaigns, we gained momentum.  Faces changed from pondered to understanding when fashion law was mentioned, and the opening of the Fashion Law Institute really put us on the map. Today, fashion law is real!

4. Creativity breeds creativity.
Seeing as fashion is totally built upon creativity, fashion law is open to just the same.  The rules to this game are "whatever fits".  Of course applicable law is what it is, and procedures must be complied with--but as a field growing quickly, the trail is still being blazed.  The tone is still being set.  Having blogs mean so much to a legal market is something totally new, and the impression social media has on this industry is unprecedented.  The fashion law community is not only on the rise, but nurturing those excited to see--we're here!

Here are our favorite Fashion Law Blawgs.  These lawyers and law students have made fashion law what it is today.  Please believe, you haven't seen anything yet!

Must-Have Treat Spots in Chicago!

Sure, it's summer time and most of us are keeping our bodies trim.  You may even be using these ab exercises to keep your body tight.  But, we all need a treat, and if you're in Chicago, here are some spots you might want to check out.

Magnolia Bakery
This spot not only has great cupcakes, but tasty slices of cake as well.  Imported from their New York birthplace, this Chicago Loop destination is the perfect stop for a treat.  Join the Cupcake Club if you dare.

More Cupcakes
They have Cupcake Happy Hour.  Really, there's nothing left to say.  But, we'll tell you they have so many creative cupcake flavors and mini sized treats--just what you need when frequenting the Magnificent Mile corridor.  You won't be disappointed and you'll definitely want "more".

Do Rite Donuts
Perfect for starting your work day.  This hidden gem on Randolph in the Loop opens early for your stop on the way to the office, and close when they run out.  Stop by their walk-up for the flavor of the day, or a regular favorite.

Glazed and Infused
A West Loop wonder, for certain.  This doughnut shop takes creativity to a whole new level.  They have seating to enjoy your treats on site, and complement their Wicker Park walk-up location perfectly.  Try their glazed or cake doughnuts....or both.

Top 5 Happenings in the NBA Playoffs

As always, this time of year is filled with highlights from the NBA post season.  This year is no different. Let's take a look at some of the biggest stories leading to the Finals.

1.  The Chicago Bulls were eliminated in the 1st Round
This is a Chicago blog.  We're a bit scorned, but are sending speedy recovery wishes to our guy Derrick Rose.  Surely when he returns, we'll be back on our way to ring #7.

2.  The 76ers were quite impressive.
Doug Collins took his young team into the Quarter Finals.  They gave the Bulls a run for their money, and made things tough for the Miami Heat as well.  We know going into next season, the '6ers are no joke!

3.  The Spurs hit a 20-game winning streak.
The Spurs often refer to themselves as the "vanilla" of the NBA.  They go under the radar, aren't overly flashy or cocky, but they get things done and have found their way to the Western Conference Finals.  After losing their first game in 21 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, they are fighting their way back to the Finals.  But, please believe OKC is not making it easy--they are now up 3-2.

4.  Russell Westbrook is making a statement on and off the court.
After losing his best friend to an enlarged heart while in high school, Russell now wears Kelcey Brown's initials and number (KB3) on his wristband and shoes every game.   The 2 planned to attend UCLA together, prior to Brown's untimely death.  Today, Westbrook cosponsors a charity to collect money for underprivileged children with basketball dreams like his and KB's.  He's also keeping the Thunder striking through the Western Conference Finals.
Touching story.

5.  Rajon Rondo is making more than a name for himself.
If people weren't impressed with Rondo before, they better be now.  He had a stellar game 2 against the Miami Heat last week, despite a loss, and was unstoppable as the C's returned home for game 3.  From leading the league in assists to racking up triple-doubles left and right, Rondo is making it clear Boston has a "Big 4", compared to a "Big 3".  Gotta love that behind the back pass fake!

We're excited to watch more this evening and see how the Finals stack up.  Boston v. Miami in South Beach will definitely be interesting.
