Gucci Fights Counterfeits
In August 2009, 3 credit card processors were taken to court by famed fashion house, Gucci for handling business with a website which admittedly sold counterfeit merchandise. The merchandise infringed on the Gucci trademark, obviously hurting sales for genuine products.
Recently, Judge Harold Baer Jr. of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York refused to dismiss Gucci's suit. The case included credit card companies Frontline Processing Corp, Woodforest National Bank, Durango Merchant Services LLC, and other unnamed companies fighting the charges. The companies worked with the Laurette Company, owner of thebagaddiction.com.
The Laurette website proudly sold counterfeit Gucci merchandise until Gucci caught word of the fakes. Laurette and the credit card companies were ordered to pay Gucci $5.2 million in damages. Trademark protection is obviously serious business!
