UNIVERSITY VILLAGE
Restaurants
Mario’s Frozen Lemonade. 1068 W Taylor St.
Full of actual fruit! Best summer treat ever.
Sweet Maple Café. 1339 W Taylor St.
CY: Delicious brunch, great ambiance.
VW: Just blocks from UIC and the Medical District. The very best banana pancakes with banana actually in the batter, not just on top. Great hot chocolate and other breakfast/brunch/lunch options.
Davanti Enoteca. 1359 W. Taylor.
Italian tapas/wine shop – great addition to Taylor Street – will probably get tired of it after a while.
Ed’s Potsticker House. 3139 S Halsted St.
Best dumplings in the city! Also their other Chinese food is authentic stuff like my mom makes.
HYDE PARK
Restaurants
Hyde Park Pancake House 1517 E Hyde Park Blvd.
Might get bulldozed for Whole Foods I hear, but it was my favorite brunch place for awhile. Also, always such a lovely group of other diners there. Amazing oatmeal and pancakes.
Jimmy’s (technically Woodlawn Tap). 1172 E 55th St.
Mildly gross dive bar, but probably the only one where you can consistently listen in on conversations about applied physics and Keynesian economics.
Medici 1327 E 57th St.
Great burgers and great graffiti and carvings on every wall and piece of furniture in that place (contributions from decades’ worth of UChicago students).
Valois 1518 E. 53rd St.
Great cafeteria style location with amazing pancakes. Their cornbread and biscuits are good, too. It's a great place to study and meet up with friends!
Other
Japanese Garden in Jackson Park 6401 S Stony Island Ave.
So beautiful and peaceful – an excellent place to end up after a long bike ride on the lakefront path. Pure serenity in the city.
