Is Living Low Car in Chicago Possible? II: Electric Boogaloo

Finishing up the 3rd week of the Low Car Diet, and in the past two weeks, I have biked almost 110 miles, which is kind of weird to think about. It’s made me think about how much I travel in and around the city, and how what the impact is of me going to and fro, even on bike and transit. Luckily, I stumbled across a tweet to a Slate article that actually talks about how our different modes of transportation effect our environment.

Looking at that article, I would say that my travel impact is pretty small, as my bike is pretty old , and I most certainly do not eat an all beef diet (in fact, I eat a no-meat-at-all diet). Add to the fact that biking an average of 55 miles per week is probably pretty good exercise for the normal person, providing a lot-cost alternative to the gym (unless you really feel you need to go).

My official low car diet will end on the 25th of August, but I plan to continue to be as low-car as possible, “low” being the operative word; I would not try to move without a car of some sort…that could be both dangerous (to my back) and wildly inefficient. Hopefully this short post leads some of you to think how your commute impacts the environment and maybe why it might be a good idea to try a low-car diet as well.
