Top 5 Facts About Black History Month...& Some Photos We Just Love!
We all know February is Black History Month, but Black History is American History. Here are some important things to know about the commemoration:
1. Black History Month began as National Negro Week in 1926, encompassing the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass--both pivotal figures in the abolition of slavery. The celebration was the idea of historian, Carter G. Woodson.
2. Black history clubs and interest groups started showing up across the country in the 30s and 40s, sparking interest in learning and teaching more, particularly in the school systems.
3. The celebration was extended to the full month of February in 1976, with President Gerald Ford seeing it as an opportunity to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
4. Canada and the UK also devote a month to celebrating Black History.
5. The NAACP was founded on February 12, 1909--the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.
