The Week In Headlines--

Over the last week, there's been some pretty interesting news...and some not so interesting.  Either way, here's just a few of the stories which stood out for us.

They tried it with Oprah
Swiss boutique Trois Pommes, refused to allow the Queen of Media to see a black Tom Ford bag, citing it as "too expensive"--to Oprah.  Ms. Winfrey is arguably the richest woman walking the planet, and can certainly afford whatever she pleases, including a $35,000 bag.  According to O, the employee "She said: `No, no, no, you don't want to see that one. You want to see this one. Because that one will cost too much; you will not be able to afford that,'"  "And I said, `Well, I did really want to see that one.' And she refused to get it."

Apologies followed, but hopefully this was a teachable moment for the employee and the citizens of Switzerland.

Sanjay Gupta gets out of the weeds
After previously dispelling any benefits of medical marijuana, CNN medical expert Dr. Sanjay Gupta has recanted his stance, which was based on the federal controlled substance schedule.  With more and more states authorizing medical and even recreational marijuana, this news might settle the minds of some not as savvy on the pros and cons of the greenery.

Ebony dedicates covers to Trayvon
Just a few weeks after the verdict setting George Zimmerman free for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, Ebony Magazine is dedicating 4 September covers to the teenager.  Surely there's a lot to be said about the case, but the awareness about its implications should continue in conversation.

Gun advocates plan appreciation day in Newtown
In Wildly Insensitive News, gun rights activists are planning a Starbucks Appreciation Day in Newtown, CT in celebration of their right to carry in the coffeehouse.  You'll recall Newtown is the place where a grammar school was shot up just 8 months ago. The group is using this Facebook page to gain support.  I wonder how the coffee-drinking moms feel about this one.
*Let us be clear:  We are not anti rights here, and not anti guns in general, but they have a place--not in urban settings, and not in a place plagued by such a tragedy so soon after.  As always, our prayers are with Newtown, and every city across America.

Tyra Banks shuns diets
Tyra Banks is a supermodel icon.  She's been on a bunch of covers, has fame on TV, and is a great role model to young girls, particularly when it comes to body image.  This week, she let us know she was not into diets, and embraces the curves she has making her so beautiful.  She encourages others to do the same.
"I don't believe in diets...lost weight a couple of years ago and realized I got too thin... I started seeing pictures and I thought, 'Oh, I don't like that.  that doesn't look good.  I need some ass.'"  Gotta love how real she keeps it!  You tell 'em, Tyra!

Curves are becoming more and more accepted in our scrutinizing beauty world.  Let's hope this continues.  Be who you are, ladies, and love yourself unconditionally.

That's the news, folks!
