Second Baptist Church of Washington was founded in 1848. Rev. Dr. James Edward Terrell is the Pastor. As the second oldest African American Baptist church in Washington DC, Second Baptist Church was started 14 years BEFORE the slaves in the District were freed. According to oral tradition, the building was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The church ran a day school after the Civil War and later established a Sunday School Lyceum, attracting such nationally prominent speakers as Frederick Douglass and Rev. Adam Clayton Powell. The Women's Club of Second Baptist Church is chaired by Mariessa Terrell.
