Ebony Fashion Fair Collection:  The Auction

Chicago West Loop gem Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is holding an auction tomorrow, March 19, 2013, highlighting the ever popular Ebony Fashion Fair traveling runway show.

The show was started by Eunice Walker Johnson, the wife of Johnson Publishing Company founder John Johnson, in 1958.  It was the first of its kind and was a staple in the fashion industry for 50 years.  The show traveled everywhere, bringing popular European high fashion to African American communities.  This was not only an opportunity for viewers to see a high fashion show, but also for models to break into an industry once limited.  It was an inspiration to aspiring fashion designers and stylists as well.

In addition to the auction, an Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit will be housed at the Chicago History Museum for the next year.  Local fashionistas are not the only ones excited about it, but the daughter of the Johnson dynasty is as well.

"My mother often spoke about the importance of African American women feeling beautiful," Linda Johnson Rice, Johnson Publishing Company chairman said in a statement about the show. “The Ebony Fashion Fair legacy represents an important part of the rich African American cultural experience in America, and I am extremely excited that the Chicago History Museum is bringing my mother’s vision to life.”

I got to preview the auction and was so amazed by the items.  If you're interested in bidding, check out the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers and prepare your offers!
